This lesson will introduce students to the art of Chuck Close as well as exploring the ways technology can be incorporated into traditional art.

  • The technology that the teacher will need for this unit is a computer, imaging program, digital camera, Publisher or similar program and a black and white printer (laser preferably). Other technology you could use is a SmartBoard, digital drawing tablet, document camera or web cam. CBS interview
  • Traditional art supplies are pencils, erasers, 1/2 inch graph paper, construction paper, post-it note framing angles.

I begin by telling the story of Chuck Close. His art and his life. Students are very interested in how he can paint from a wheelchair. I show the students how Chuck Close uses a photograph as a starting point for his paintings.

Then I photograph each student with a digital camera. This can be done using a low resolution setting on the camera and if there is a black and white setting use that also. (you don't need color) Before the next class next meets I convert the images to black and white and insert the images into a grid on a publisher page and print one for each child. Photo Grid.pub

Below are the  PowerPoints I used in this lesson.
