MixBooks

The above book was created by a first grade class. This is a very simple project that you can do in collaboration with your classroom teachers.

Begin by taking a digital photo of each students work in a class, I did this one just as they finished their crayon resist fish painting (some you can still see the water on the paper) I did not bother to record who’s painting was which. I just made sure that I kept the classes separate in the files on my computer. At the end of the day I uploaded the class to MixBooks. If you are fast you can actually upload the images near the end of class and show the students the book in progress right there. Explain to the students that they will now be able to wrote a story about their picture and that it will become part of a book.

Now the fun part. give the URL (web site) of your mixbook account to the classroom teacher and ask her to allow the students to spend their center, or writing time using the classroom computer to add their story to the book. Given enough notice of the project most teachers will add this into their lesson plans for the students.

There with this simple project you have introduced digital photography, wiki web use, digital online printing, writing, and collaboration with another teacher.
